2016 Leaf Series Cabernet Malbec
2016 vintage started late, two to three weeks later than the preceding couple of years. The reason for this was the mild, cool spring weather experienced all across the southern part of the state. The autumn weather was kinder to ripening red varieties in Wilyabrup than in more southerly regions – allowing fruit to ripen to desirable baume before harvest..
Cabernet sauvignon and Malbec fruit were sourced from a Wilyabrup vineyard at the warmer, northern end of the Margaret River appellation. The harvested fruit was then sorted and crushed into open vats for a cool, extended ferment, which lasted up to 3 weeks. During this period each parcel of fruit was pumped over and hand plunged to extract colour, fine tannin and varietal complexity. The wine was then matured for 14 months in a range of French oak barriques before blending by barrel selection.
Blackcurrant, spice and ripe tannins from the Cabernet sauvignon coalesce perfectly with plush, juicy and robust structured Malbec. An elegant wine with fragrant red fruit, a structured palate with subtle oak, culminating in a finely textured finish.
This rustic, full-bodied wine is perfect to drink with a hearty winter meal. It is structured to match a grilled rib-eye steak, roast leg of lamb or a great match with Texas BBQ beef brisket.
