Wine Companion highlights best of Margaret River
James Halliday and the Wine Companion team live streamed their much anticipated 2021 Halliday Awards ceremony last week – for the first time it was a totally virtual affair – and anybody could tune in and watch online.
Congratulations to nearby Leeuwin Estate and Moss Wood who won the ‘Best White’ and ‘Best Red’ categories with typically signature wines. Wise Wine are thrilled to have made both the ‘Best of Cabernet Sauvignon’ and ‘Best of Chardonnay’ lists with our Eagle Bay Series entries. This is rare air indeed, Wise was one of only 9 Margaret River wineries to have a Red & White wine making Halliday’s ‘Best of’ lists.
|2018 Eagle Bay Series Wilyabrup Margaret River Cabernet sauvignon
Matured for 18 months in new and 1yo French barriques. While this Margaret RIver Cabernet sauvignon is medium to full-bodied, the balance is such that man will be unable to resist the temptation of drinking some tonight. It is full of luscious cassis fruit, the contrast – and the balance – soft, almost chocolatey, tannins.
|2018 Eagle Bay Series Margaret River Chardonnay
Sourced from Dijon clones grown in the cool Karridale district at the southern end of Margaret River. Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, fermented and matured in new French bouquet. This is a Margaret River Chardonnay of exceptional intensity, length and freshness, with its white peach/grapefruit duo having absorbed the oak and relished its acidity.
Both of these fabulous wines have sold out, but their successors are available to try in our Tasting Room. They are already looking very good and in time, as they mature and develop complexity, may equal or surpass the Class of 2021.
So, big thanks to James Halliday and his team for the enormous (and enviable) job they do tasting and reviewing 9,000 wines each year. And if you’d like to try your hand, come to Eagle Bay and taste our lovely range of wines and gins – we’d love to welcome you soon!
